Legions

The Daethian military is comprised of various armies, known as legions.
Each legion is numbered, but also usually has an unofficial but widely known name.
Legions do differ in their tactics and strategy and sometimes culture or values (provided they align with official doctrine).

Cohorts

Each Legion is comprised of smaller sub-components, known as Cohorts.
A Cohort is also numbered, and designed to function as an independent army.
Within a legion, cohorts are often very similar to each other. The number of Cohorts belonging to a legion varies depending on the legion.

Squads

Cohorts are broken down further into squads. like legions and cohorts,Squads are known by number, sometimes with internal names (usually only familiar to that legion).

They layouts of squads is fairly flexible, depending on each legion and their overarching speciality or history. Below is a list of common squads and some specialist squads.

Common Squads

  • HQ / Logistics - Operations, communication and leadership. Often contains the Cohort leader themselves.
  • Light Infantry - The standard Daethian solider squad. Usually armed with Swords, Maces, Pikes or Halberds. Lightly armoured in Chain shirts and Gambesons with kettle helmets.
  • Marksmen - Ranged infantry of bows or crossbows with light armour.
  • Mage Cadre - Mage contingent, see below.

Specialised Squads

  • Outrider squad, A special forces squad designed to penetrate undercover deep into enemy territory for reconnaissance, disruption or taking out valuable targets.
  • Assassination / Infiltration squad, Designed to kill VIP targets or gather information in population centers. Rarely used in direct combat. More suited to urban warfare than outrider squads.
  • Sapper / Engineer squad - Differs slightly from legion to legion. Some Legions prefer using sappers offensively to destroy key infrastructure with explosives, others will build bridges, makeshift siege equipment or defensive structures.

Other organisations

The Hand

A secret police that works covertly within the legions, observing the Empires interests are followed and dissidents are dealt with. The hand have executive power rivalling that of a legatus, they canimprison, torture or execute, anyone they please.

The leader of the Hand is a Gnome called Ludovic Herrman, sometimes jokingly referred to as the thumb (though not within earshot).

Mage Cadre

Mage Cadres, unlike other squads, are not created within a cohort by the legions themselves. Instead, existing cadres are sent to cohorts by order of the High Magus. Some Cadres operate completely independently of the legions, reporting the the high magus himself.

Because of this, mage cadres are often distrusted by other squads, with commanders often having to wrestle with the split loyalties.

Experimental units

It is rumoured that throughout the Empires history, secretive units have been tested - some as part of the legions, others left completely independent, though records of these units are scrubbed.
