Matt Mercers resurrection rules

If a character is dead, and a resurrection is attempted by a spell or spell effect with longer than 1 action casting time, a resurrection challenge is initiated.

Up to 3 members of the party can offer to contribute to the resurrection via Roleplay - they must convince Death to return the soul to the living. The DM asks each contributing player to make a skill check based on their form of contribution, with the DC being adjusted by how helpful/impactful the DM feels the contribution would be.

After all contributions are completed, the DM then rolls a single, fiinal resurrection success check with no modifier. The base DC for the final resurrection check is 10, increasing by 1 for each previous successful resurrection the character has undergone. For each successful contribution skill check, the DC is decreased by 3, whereas each failed contribution increases the skill check by 1.

upon a successful resurrection check, the players soul, should they be willing, will be returned to the body and the ritual succeeds. If this check succeeds but is lower than the DC + 5 then the player is on ‘borrowed time’. Every day that passes, their hit point maximum is reduced by one. When it reaches zero, the character fades away to the realm of death. If this check succeeds above the DC + 5, or on a 20, then the player is released from Death completely. On a failed check, the soul does not return and the character’s soul will move on to the realm of death.
